Are Blogs Necessary in 2026? (Or Are We Just Writing Into the Void?)

To blog or not to blog, that is the question. With the rise of AI is there any point of blogs anymore? Or are we just being performative Shakespearean's here?
Between AI tools answering everything instantly, people getting their information from TikTok and Instagram reels, and attention spans now competing with goldfish (who are frankly winning), it’s a fair question.
But the truth is, blogs didn't die. They just had their own glow up!
The Reality Check: What Changed?
Once upon a time, blogging was simple. You write something, pack it with keywords like a salmon tin, publish it and Voilà! You got yourself a traffic-generating blog, look at you go!
Fast forward to 2026…
Blogs are a whole new thing now. Because now they have to make sense for,
Search engines
AI tools
And a human who’s already halfway distracted
But hey, no pressure or anything.
The Big Three: SEO, AEO, GEO
If you have been in the digital marketing space (or the DM space, as the cool kids call it), you can't get away from the big three. So who are these guys and why are they so important?
Let’s break it down.
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) - The OG
The good old SEO. You know it, you love it. SEO has been here for a long time and it was always about:
Keywords
Backlinks
User Experience
Technical performance
Basically, it’s how you convince Google to pick you from the rest.
But here’s the catch…
Ranking #1 doesn’t guarantee clicks anymore.
Why? Because Google now answers the question for you.
Rude.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) - The New Favourite Child
AEO is about getting your content picked as the answer. You know the AI summary you get when you ask a question on Google? Yup, that's AEO.
You can now have one clear answer to the age-old question of "was Rachel and Ross on a break?" (Though the answer was always clear if you ask me).
If your blog isn’t structured to:
Directly answer questions
Have structured data (lists)
Conversational language
Chances are, your blog won't be recommended by AEO. So people would have to scroll down to find your content. Now, when was the last time you actually scrolled down if the answer you wanted was in that AI overview? Exactly.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) - The Plot Twist
GEO is where things get interesting.
This is about making sure your content is used by AI when it generates answers, not just when it retrieves them.
In other words, you need to make sure AI is reading your blog. Even if humans aren't....yet. Because if AI wants to make those shiny AI summaries they need to get that information from somewhere. So you better hope that somewhere is your blog.
So if your content:
Lacks depth
Has no authority and citations
Adds no real insight
Say goodbye to getting ranked anywhere in this economy.
So… Are Blogs Still Necessary?
Let’s not overcomplicate it.
Yes. Very. Painfully. Obviously. Yes.
But not the lazy kind.
AI Needs Something to Learn From
AI doesn’t magically invent knowledge (except that time when you need references for your research paper).
It pulls from content. So it needs credible and insightful data that explores topics deeply. Because without blogs they can't keep that AI overview box up and running.
No blogs = no source = no visibility.
They Build Trust
Anyone can run ads and create AI generated videos. But a well-written blog? That shows that someone sat down and put effort into creating a piece of content that has an actual human behind it. Which is why AI loves to cite blogs. Which is why you should write content worth citing, and it only needs some actual effort
And in 2026, effort is surprisingly rare.
What Actually Works in 2026
1. Be Useful (Not Just “Optimized”)
Answer real questions that people have. The world is a small place now, and there's bound to be something you can shed some light on.
2. Structure Like You Care
Clear headings
Bullet points
Short paragraphs
Images
Because no one wants to read a wall of text. Not even you. Make sure the person that's reading your content actually wants to read it.
3. Write Like a Human
The unfortunate demise of human creativity. People are so used to generating blogs now rather than using AI as a tool to enhance their creativity. Make sure to add some of your own flair to your work. Some jokes and quips, maybe some pop culture references here and there.
Remember, just because you write like an AI doesn't mean it'll be read by an AI
4. Having a proper strategy
Last but not least, you need to have a proper strategy. Blogs do not necessarily mean you are going to get ranked on the internet. But if you want to get ranked you need to have blogs and strategies to support them.
Not sure about the kind of strategy to choose? Why not check our blog here, where we talk all about optimising your content for the big three?
The Final Verdict
So… are blogs necessary in 2026?
Yes. But they’ve evolved.
They are no longer:
Just for traffic
Just for SEO
They are now:
AI fuel (AEO + GEO)
Authority builders
Conversion tools
A must-have piece in your content strategy
In 2026 the internet does not need more content. What it needs is better content. So if you want to stay ahead of the curve, make sure to write better blogs.
